Today is the day that Melanie revealed the theme for Mystery Stole 3. I have been convinced for awhile that it was going to be Arachne, and that what we were going to see today was the beginning of the web section. Alak, I am wrong, as she told the almost 6700 of us that her theme is Swan Lake. That's cool.
Speaking of revelations, when I showed Stephanie my version of the stole yesterday, she was a little quiet for a moment. Then she dug through her knitting bag and pulled out hers. This is why she was so shocked: we are both holding up row 275.
Same yarn, same needles. Ever wonder what all the fuss over gauge is about?
Now I'll cop to being lazy about stitch count when it comes to lace because I am (you might notice here) tall. But I had no idea.
Stephanie could wear mine as a burkha. And I have underpants bigger than hers. (after last night at Borders in Burlington, it's clear that I am in good company. There was quite a selection to choose from after the snowstorm of panties thrown at her when she reached the podium. You can imagine.)
And because it was a theme for the day, the Mister also "Kinneared" us.

K, I'm going to admit my stupidity here and say that I don't get the panties thing.
The gauge difference in your stoles is amazing! I like that you're each knitting stoles to fit, though. :-)

That picture is very very funny.
Did you bring her around town so she see for herself what all the fuss about "YH" is all about?Funny, she shares the same letters as the July tourist extravaganza . I would prefer a whole week dedicated to Yarn Harlot, with folks wearing funny hats and knitting downtown and displaying their knitting flags all week.
:)

Wow, at least the gauge thing you've both got going is properly proportionate to each of you. Sorry to have missed out on the fun last night.

That's amazing. And it reminds me of the time my friend Lois and I made the same quilt. Our seams were different by just a smidge but in the finished size hers was about 2 inches smaller than mine all the way around.

Stephanie's looks almost like a bib, the way you're holding it up, in comparison to her burkha. ; ) So who's actually knitting closest to intended gauge?

It was great to see you last night! The panties will be knitting's greatest inside joke for a while, I imagine.
And as for the theme... I was honestly hoping she'd release it in a file that I wouldn't have to look at until I was up to clue 4 (I'm only a little bitty past 1). But I guess it's ok, because I wouldn't have guessed it anyway. And now I know the story of Swan Lake, it's a win!

That. Is. FUNNY!
:-D
You should send that picture to Interweave. Really! It would be the perfect accompaniment to an article on gauge and the vagaries thereof. ;-)

That IS funny. As Manise says, your results are proportional. We had several Kinnear sightings here in Rockport a few years ago when he was here to make a movie -- the one about conjoined twins, I forget the name. Things get hopping in Rockport when there's a movie crew and cast. The "bestest" time was when Spielberg spent the summer. His (many) kids just joined into the regular Rockport summer stuff, swimming and tennis lessons, for example. He was quite nice - low key and friendly. Anyway.

Hmmm....that gauge thing. I guess I'm going to have to get better about stuff like that.

hahahaha! It's an even bigger difference that I was picturing in my head when you told me about it! Maybe smaller people knit more tightly instinctively. Maybe there's a subconcious correlation between our size and our gauge. . .
Maybe we can get funding for a research study on that.

That photo is really funny! I also thought the theme was Arachne. But it was fun guessing!

Love the picture - hilarious!
If it was small people=equal small gauge, then my Moth wouldn't have turned out even bigger that Julia's. 'Cause I'm pretty darn short!
I'm also one of those who doesn't bother much with gauge and lace - I just make sure I have more than plenty and enough yarn!!!

Hahahaha,,, I never saw a better: the best explanation is in the showing! I think you can sell these photos as a knitting teacher's aid!

LOL I can just imagine all the panties flying at her.
Wow that is quite a difference for sure. Looks like you are each making the right size for you though. They look great!!

Well, that's just astonishing. Have you maybe blocked yours more recently than she has? Otherwise, my head might explode. :)

Too too funny! That isn't stitch count, is it? It's all gauge, right? And this time gauge isn't evil? Too much?

I can't believe I missed such a fun night! I haven't stopped pouting. I can't believe the difference in the stoles! Amazing.
Posted by: Heather | August 03, 2007 at 03:23 PM
This totally means I get to call you a loose woman now.
Posted by: Rachel H | August 03, 2007 at 03:25 PM
Holy Swan Lake! Seriously, that's major.

Thanks for the GREAT gauge photos! Very funny in a fun way.

Can't stop laughing about those stoles....
Posted by: Norma | August 03, 2007 at 09:57 PM
Wow. That is a huge, huge difference. Maybe I should be worried about that little gauge issue I'm having with my first shawl.
Posted by: Suzanne V. (Yarnhog) | August 03, 2007 at 11:33 PM
heeheehee! Mine is on the larger side too. :)
Posted by: Romi | August 04, 2007 at 01:02 AM
That is a great photo.
I also knit loosely. A friend recently trialed a shoulder shawl pattern I'm developing. As she knew my loose tendencies, she ignored my needle size. On similar yarn she found US7 too tight and US8 gave her a nice gauge for the lacey pattern. My gauge was between her two - on US4.
For those wondering about the panty thing, check out the current Vogue Knitting. Stephanie's now officially a knitting rock star by her own definition.

Hilarious! It is amazing how much we fret over gauge, but there is so much to be said about individual tension when using same yarn and needle. I love your Burkha & Bloomers reference. Too cute!
